SUPERIOR TOWNSHIP, MI – The Ypsilanti District Library is launching the next phase of its fundraising campaign to help build a new library branch in Superior Township.
YDL’s campaign raised just over $ 1.5 million during its silent phase, with $ 500,000 in additional funds remaining to reach its goal of $ 2 million.
While the library board has allocated $ 3.5 million for the project, the campaign proceeds will ensure the new library opens with all the amenities requested by community members, officials said.
Funds from the public phase of the campaign that begins June 1 will be used to fight the rising budget resulting from COVID delays and “skyrocketing” construction costs, the library said.
“We want this library to be special and to open up with everything our community has asked for, including a book drive-in and an outdoor programming area, despite the increased costs,” Lisa said. Hoenig, director of the Ypsilanti district library.
Superior Township residents Bill and Vivienne Young, who contributed $ 400,000 to the library, will match every dollar raised up to $ 100,000. Until July 31, the Young will match every dollar donated with two of their own.
The “Young Families Next Chapter Challenge” will run until July 31 or until the challenge goal is met.
The new 7,800 square foot library site is on the east side of Harris Road between Geddes Road and MacArthur Boulevard, with parking available at the northeast corner of MacArthur Boulevard and Harris Road. The new space is a full-service branch with the same opening hours as other YDL locations and will have its own staff.
The building will replace the 1,000 square foot “temporary” space on MacArthur Boulevard that has been used since 2007 to improve library access in Superior Township and Willow Run.
The Ypsilanti District Library held a groundbreaking ceremony on April 7 at the site of the new building. Construction of the facility is expected to begin on Monday, May 24, according to Sam Killian, community relations specialist at the Ypsilanti District Library.
