NORFOLK, Virginia (WAVY) – Throughout the month we are highlighting great educators in our area.
Well, it’s time to meet a library media specialist in Norfolk who has worked hard to find a way to keep his students reading, while also sharing stories with them that would give them the boost they need to stay positive during the toughest times.
“I think the word of the day, every day, is to be flexible,” said Linda McIntire.
McIntire is the Library Media Specialist at Fairlawn Elementary School, although she simply calls herself a librarian.
“I think there is something special between the books in your hand and the books on the screen.”
So when schools closed last year due to COVID, McIntire made it his mission to get these books into the hands of children. Even though she’s back to school now, she thinks back to how she created an online document that students can fill out if they wanted books. Then, three days a week, she would meet with the school children to distribute them.
“I think I served 40 or 50 families that way.”
Ms. McIntire now has a mobile classroom where she delivers books to students. She also reads books in classes focusing on equity and social / emotional needs.
“She goes out of her way to make sure our students are successful,” said June Lightfoot, principal of Fairlawn Elementary.
Lightfoot says Ms. McIntire is always a smiling, hard worker.
“I’m not sure how to give her time back, and not just in her immediate job, but also in any open job or with the support the staff need, Ms. McIntire will be the first to step in and say, ‘I’m going to do it. make. I will help. What can I do?'”
Linda McIntire, an excellent educator.
“Just sitting here listening to it made me realize what a gem I have!” Said Lightfoot.
