Get the signature Chanel look with a High Street price tag this season: Tweed is back – with a twist

Sleek, timeless and slightly intimidating, the beautiful curly suit is back in full force, and women everywhere are raving about it.

Could it be that after spending the better part of two years swaddled in cozy sweatpants, the prospect of a “serious” outfit is pretty exciting? Step forward, this sleek little two-piece that offers a guaranteed way to look chic, while leaving us feeling as frisky as a spring lamb.

Fashion houses have favored it for decades – it’s Chanel’s signature look. The secret lies in this word, curly. It’s French for “bouclé” and refers to the way wool is spun from a series of curly fibers. It won’t wrinkle. It keeps you warm. It has been designed to provide freedom of movement and allow air to circulate. Above all, although comfortable, it gives off a feminine power.

Coco Chanel is said to have discovered the functionality of then-cheap tweed in the 1930s while riding with her lover, the Duke of Westminster. The fashion doyenne noticed how the tweed resisted rough ferns and prickly thorns (how else would sheep do?). Anna Wintour has worn Chanel bouclé suits for decades and often wore the jacket over a blouse or t-shirt to soften the look.

With Chanel’s sky-high prices out of reach for most, the good news is that the bouclé suit has taken over the high street. LK Bennett has a skirt and jacket (pictured, third from left) that can be paired with heels to speed up the style.

Winser London offers a three-piece navy blue set with a stylish matching coat (middle picture), a set that will show any boardroom that you mean business. Meanwhile, New Look is reporting a rush for curly suits. Textiles expert Angela Gilbey, who heads up fabric sourcing for the High Street chain, attributes some of the appetite to hit Netflix series Emily In Paris.

Emily wears her bouclé suit with her signature beret, Wintour chooses H. Stern diamonds, while Her Majesty The Queen accessorizes hers with her signature Launer handbag, a Hermès scarf and, on occasion, a corgi. The question is: how are you going to wear yours?
