SUMMER MEANS MORE TIME TO READ – A host of activities, both in-person and online, are planned for this month at libraries across the city.

The Thousand Oaks Library will present the following free online programs in June.

Children

Summer reading club until July 31. Readers of all ages can register and participate in a newly designed virtual summer book club.

Readers can earn points and badges by logging reading minutes and participating in activities. Earn 1,000 points to receive a small prize and enter the grand prize draw.

The library will also host free programs and challenges to encourage the love of reading.

The 2021 theme is “Imagine Your Story” and focuses on fables, fairy tales, folklore and legends.

Take and make: glass bead magnets. For ages 5 and up, including adults. Sign up for a free glass bead magnet kit until June 20 and pick it up before the end of the month. Participants will receive a confirmation email when their kit is ready to be picked up. One kit per library card while supplies last.

Virtual children’s bingo from 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Thursday June 10 and 24 via Zoom. 4 and 5 year olds and their families can play a virtual game of ABC and 1-2-3 bingo. When registering, select the total number of household members who plan to play bingo, including adults. After registering, customers will receive an email regarding bingo card pickup preferences. A confirmation email will be sent when the bingo card is ready to be picked up. Registration is compulsory.

Early Readers Virtual Book Club from 3:30 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. on Monday, June 21 via Zoom. The program does not teach children to read but aims to encourage children to read. Each month, participants will discover a book that will be read aloud with the group, followed by an activity. Registration is compulsory.

Reading buddies from 3:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 4 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. from Tuesday, June 22 to July 27. Children in Grades 1 to 4 can gain confidence in their reading with the help of an interactive volunteer reading buddy. A parent or guardian must be present during the Zoom session.

Bilingual story time videos will be available for viewing at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 24 on the library’s website or Facebook page.

Virtual Writing Buddies from 4 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursday, June 24 to July 29 via Zoom. Children in grades two to five can practice their writing with the help of an interactive volunteer writing partner. A parent or guardian must be present during the session.

Teens and tweens

Teen space. Teens can check the library’s website for virtual bulletin board activities, Thousand Oaks Teen Advisory League book recommendations, and summer programs.

Volunteer opportunities in the summer of 2021 for teenagers. For 14 to 19 year olds. Teens can complete an application to be notified of opportunities as they arise.

Kahoot Virtual Trivia Tuesdays for Grades 6 to 12 from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday June 15 and 29. Registration is compulsory.

Anime Your Way drawing class from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, June 22 on Zoom. Teens can learn to draw styles of anime, manga, and comics from a local artist and create their own designs and characters. Registration is compulsory.
